With the waiting lists that some of these retailers have these days, I figured I would save myself a lot of time and trouble by just laying low. Moontigers remind me of summers long gone. One de-caffeinated disappointment at a time, s'il vu plais; I haven't bothered with Stonehaven. Not the holy grail, I can assure you, but worth a few tins if you have the chance. It certainly has a potent tin aroma, and complex taste, but perhaps a little much for my palette at this time. The smell from the tin made me salivate. On a positive ending note, I gained a deepened appreciation for my 1792, Full Virginia, Brown #4, Cob Plug, and Black XX blessings, among others. I really don't believe it's the Oriental/Turkish turning me off, and I love Latakia. Don't stress over finding it. It does seem to be lacking a little something that I usually crave in english blends, though I'm not sure what exactly. If you receive this confirmation repeatedly, you will need to enable cookies so that your response can be saved. Never after a meal, and never with Scotch. I'm some place around the halfway point right now and my palate is telling me " okay we get the point , you done yet?" An easy smoking Virginia and oriental blend with latakia in the background. I simply don't know, and also don't care. It's hard to add much here that hasn't already been said, but I feel obliged to give it another 4 star vote. What a life! Having said it is a unique blend, I would still like to compare it with two other blends which although dissimilar, share some qualities with it. cellared and if they let us buy more than one bag out of every shipment we get in, I'd have a lot more.'. I am extremely glad, for a change, to have been able to get one of the most seeked after tobaccos on the market. It is a waste to smoke this even in the most gentle breeze. Esoterica Penzance - when available, very limited! The flakes are all in tack but, the crumble cake however is a bit too crumbly for me. I want to stuff flakes of this up my nose and smell it all day long. I find it appealing that this is such a well rounded tobacco, but at the same time, none of these elements shines in a way that compels me to want it the way some of my blends do. Proportions of constituent tobaccos? This is one of my favorites. Here's my review after 4 bowls in different pipes. Fierce, penetrating, leathery, earthy. Good stuff, but it's a little strong. Honestly, just thinking about it makes me feel dizzy. Wow! Penzance produces a rich, velvety smoke in large volumes. My conclusion of Penzance is that those beholden to it are just a little bit insane. This is a nice, full bodied blend very similar to Smokers Haven Krumble Kake and both are made by Germain so there ya go. Something Lakeland-ish.. Greetings, I must say that for me unquestionably this is the best Latakia infused English I have ever put a match to. A couple of months after that, my cousin came over to my house with a tin of penzance. Smokey, dense, tangy, leathery, peaty, beef jerky..Everything a English blend should be. This stuff has a flavor which is hard to describe. It is other-worldly, and it makes you wonder just what is in there! Borkum Riff Pipe Tobacco I have liked this tobacco for several years. I think a person has to try this one as this may be their favorite or?.worst. I have tried some 60 blends( a relative neophyte, I guess). ============================================= Ok as an update I have noticed many people have trouble packing and lighting this particular blend and that keeps them from fully enjoying it. It smokes cool and dry with no bite. Is my life really that empty that I must give into the hype of some stuff that apparently smells like old bum? I can totally see why people will sell their kids/cars/& wives to try and get this stuff. Because of the high demand/low availability, we do not presell, hold any aside, or notify customers when shipments arrive. But it is gone now, and so I begin a quest for my Holy Grail: A substitute to replace the standard on which all English tobaccos are based: Penzance & Nightcap are the number 1 and number 2 most-reviewed tobaccos on this board. It is recommendable for beginners as well or experienced smokers. This smoke is right on the cusp of my taste buds so sometimes I think it's mild and other times I think it has great taste. This is a blend that defines the word 'synergy' and is my special treat when I am looking for seductively smooth black Latakia magic. Some will claim to not be impressed, but I don't buy it. The aroma is typical English latakia. Rating 5 out of 5 points. I love the smell it leaves on my hands after smoking it all day. So far I've gone through about 2 to 3 oz of this stuff. My only problem with penzance is that I tend to become bored with it if smoked everyday. Abingdon is better than this, but I prefer Westminster -- there is just more going on. A wonderful Oriental forward blend, and worth keeping a number of tins cellared. Love it or hate it, it sure gets some interest. This is a tobacco that provides a rugged but varied sensory landscape to explore, and even when you become familiar with the territory subsequent journeys always seem to pick up just a little something new. Unlike most Aromatics that lose 90% of their flavor 1/2 way down the bowl, I even enjoy the last 1/3 of the bowl as it changes flavors. The wax wrapper oozes more oil the my old Triumph (shift with the right foot, thank you), and the first taste makes me utter "Oh, momma!" For a full English blend, Penzance is somewhat milder than I expected. Age When Smoked: Both New and Aged 5 years. It was inevitable that I would need to try Penzance after seeing the long list of reviews here. Its always worth a try though , sometimes if you look hard you can find things you want . =. I didn't get much nicotine, and that's a good thing overall. I do find it to smoke a little hot for me, as well as wet, and this counterbalances my enjoyment of the taste enough to keep me from reaching for it commonly. It comes in crumble-cake, which is an annoyance if you carry / travel your pipes, but is really the right packaging for this style of tobacco. Esoterica- Penzance - mars cigars & pipes The tin note was smoky and sweet as well as the smoke with just enough bite to remind you that it is an English without being overpowering. Home > Pipe Tobacco > . I must add Ive smoked Penzance 2001-2005 & 2008-2014.all were just what I would consider an okay smoke. I have no idea Age When Smoked: New, and then again aged 6 months. As you smoke the pipe down though, you get into an oriental nirvana that I haven't quite found in any other blend I've tried. But then he came, and I saw his fruity bug vroom on down the street. This is an excellently balanced composition, with all the flavours merging together to sing a fine chordal progression. And the complexity of the blend revealing different note going trough the bowl never ceased to amaze me. The slices can be rubbed out from a rough consistency to a near powder. I still have yet to have it "bite" even with the moisture. A wonderful english blend I have yet to buy any but have smoked appoximately 3-4 bowls at work with a smoking buddy of mine.Being a heavy cigarette smoker I naturally drifted to aromatics upon picking up the pipe staying away from english blends, found them not smoky tasting butsoapy tasting. This blend however did not have a soapytaste but a mild woodsy taste with a slite sweetness drifting in and out, most likely from the virginias. The base tobaccos are fine but there is a top note missing that I crave that was something like anise and it has left the room. The wax paper covering the tobacco is soaked in oil . The latakia seems in just about the correct proportion to not overpower the Orientals which dominate the flavor. Just superb. Highest recommendation and well worth the money. Overall, a great blend. Give it a go! The Virginias are delicious. The smell out the bag/tin is pungent. Though it has been a while since I've had Margate (intentionally, to maintain varied points of comparision), I feel on initial taste the keen handling of the VA and Latakia component places Penzance above that blend. For those who seek truly superlative tobacco blends on their pilgrimages in the briar, neither of these should be missed. It burned extremely slow with allot of cool woodsy smoke and s ome floral notes with nothing much more to say about this super hyped blend. Pipes & Pipe Tobacco - Payless Cigars and Pipes Is that the image you want your customers to have of you? This is a well behaved tobacco offering only a little bite when over-puffed. For what it is, it's excellent, but since I know there are many tobaccos out there I would rate a 4, the question arises would I rebuy this particular tobacco, assuming my tastes don't change much more. As a smoker for 8 years(of course not pipe just cigarettes, yes it's still not much), I don't think this kind of nicotine can satisfied me. That said I will try to give some tips that work for me with this blend. Esoterica is the most refined of blenders, and Penzance is not Old Ironsides. The oriental leaf is subtle, refined and smooth. Was this possible? Rich with a marked creaminess, on the high side it offers sweet wood smoke, dried fruit, and camphor, while its lower register harbors notes of aged Assam tea, salted meat, and peat. I've found I enjoy it most when I can smoke slowly and take time to appreciate it - smoked quickly or on a windy day the Latakia seems to overwhelm the other flavors, making it very good instead of great tasting. Salt was the only flavor present. I know there's some oriental or something floating around in there too. I've got plenty of Latakia blends laying around, some pretty good, some, like G.L.Pease's Renaissance, so good that Beelzebub himself must have been involved. It's easy to load, fairly dry out of the tin, and much less finicky and easier to keep lit compared to Margate and its other sister blends. Aside from the Donegal Rocky, I find that this blend smokes well in pipes generally devoted to Dunhill's Nightcap. The flakes are almost solid black, very crumbly, and a bit more moist than I expected. Esoterica: Penzance 2oz Pipe Tobacco Product Number: 003-024-0020 A wonderful, complex secret recipe of the finest Virginias, choice Turkish and Orientals and Cyprian Latakia, all hand blended together, hard pressed and broad cut into thick flakes. Some may take exception, but I find it to be exceptional. The flavor is still heavy Latakia, lighter Turkish and not a not much else. But people are going nuts over Penzance not for its attributes, but for its lack of availability. I am a latakia lover (no burley for me) so this flake is a perfect second to my FAVORITE blend Balkan Saiseini. Good timing; I got very lucky. I just restocked and wished I hadn't. This doesn't effect my rating as I don't usually have a tin around long enough to worry about it, or it's relegated to the last two bowls of the tin. Esoterica Pipe Tobacco It was no where to be found, but EVERYONE was saying how great it was. The 1991 smoked outstanding after 2 lights and light tamping, stayed lit to the end. It was smoky and smooth and burnt cool. Moving into the second third, the taste is becoming even darker, maturing into a remarkably full and satisfying flavor. After removing the lid, a scent of smoky, incense, woody, earth, leathery and a bit of fermented tobacco hit me. I tend to smoke alone and happen to love it. This slight drying seems to help keep the tobacco from clumping in the bowl and I find I relight less often. The room note gets different reviews depending on the company I'm keeping at the time. We have over 100 different pipe tobaccos available in bulk including the custom Pipe Ltd. House Blends! Milan Pipe Tobacco it's a shame it's so hard to obtain though.. But last night I wanted to try something I hadn't tried yet. Given 3 tobaccos to be stranded on that desert island with. Penzance is definitely one of my 3 choices. I personally taste the orientals over the latakia. One of the best latakia blends I have smoked and one I will always keep on hand. I was afraid it would be musty or spicy with the oriental content, but these orientals are of the sweeter variety. Keep a pipe cleaner handy, as this can gurgle. That's why I believe this is more a varietal issue, and we know that any change in leaf, particularly in the Orientals or VA, would make this an over-priced run of the mill English. This stuff is amazingly good! It never got too goopy. I'm going to downgrade this to three stars. I do think the hype behind it has made this somewhat over ratedBut just barely. Stokkebye Proper English - Full on power english! There was the taste from a quarter century before. Lighting this up and closing ones eyes while sipping a tea and listening to most any of the classic rock groups from the 60s or 70s and I'm in heaven. Just delightful! Near the bottom, the pipe goes out. The background is Virginias, but I could not differentiate any particular vaieties. I prefer Presbyterian mix, and squadron leader over this also. exclusively for Butera Pipe Company using only the finest quality whole I wrote this review about 3 years ago, and I'm finishing off the same 8oz bulk package I bought 3 years ago (been hoarding and only smoking on those rarest of occasions), and I gotta say, if I had to choose one latakia blend to smoke for the rest of my life: Penzance hands down. because it is a pressed cake, there are just as many bowls in that container as in a larger round tin. The slices are at the perfect moisture and I usually stuff two and crumble the third before lighting. I rubbed out one flake gently. Upon opening the pouch, my first thought was that this was something that came from a cow pasture. But it recently sprang back into my mind during a discussion of different tobacco cuts, and I thought I'd try giving it another go. Though plume was visible, It did not improve with age. The -.5 star is for the format. Ive tried this blend in different pipes, with and without filter, straight out of the tin or very dry, packed loose or tight. I acquired a tin of Penzance because I wanted to compare it with two other blends. Fast forward two years and here I am, really enjoying this stuff. My Mixture is milder for when I don't want as strong a flavor. After a year in the jar, it needed just a little rubbing out and fairly jumped into the bowl by itself, it was that easy to fill. Mailing Address: 550 Highway 9 East, Longs, SC 29568 Telephone: Local/International: (843) 281-9304 Toll Free: (888) 366-0345. Also, sorry I'm not a native speaker, forgive my terms. I can't give this a high enough rating. Kinda like the forbidden-fruit. Quiet Nights just about reaches for that greatness, but gets muddled at the very end. What's worse every now and again it bites. Penzances taste is a one-trick-top-note. Was just gifted 15 grams of 20-year-old Penzance (1998), by way of an ebay transaction. When I found an 8 ounce bag of it at my local B&M I snatched it up. However, if you do not like the taste of a latakia, you probably will not appreciate this wonderful tobacco. Is it the best English ever ? There are a variety of flavors as you work your way down the bowl, all of them good. Boom. In my 25 years of pipe smoking, I?ve only found 3 perfect blends, and they are all Esoterica and consider Penzance to be one of them! The Cyprian latatkia in this tobacco must be very high quality because it's flavor is very smooth. So far, though, no luck. The Latakia is noticeable but does not overwhelm. That said there are some that I favor over this blend. The smoke is not thick. The texture of the damp crumbly flakes is unsatisfying. I suspect that much of the velvety, almost oily mouth feel is due to the very oily composition of the blend. Crumbles to make packing the pipe easy. Now, have some integrity and make this right, no more LIES smok ing pipes! Penzance is not a beginners blend either. I too had a hard time placing that scent. Once you have been seduced by both, you cannot do without either. It was boring and I found myself longing for a bowl of Squadron Leader (my favorite English). The blending of latakia, virginaian and orientals is very nice. Rubs out easily, packs neatly and lights well. Now it is a very good tobacco - one of the best - but a risky investment unless you intend to consume it all early on. It's a truly amazing smokesmooth, smokey, bacony, not your usual English blend, that's for sure. This is not a complex blend and changes very little from beginning to end. What can I add to the plethora of reviews of this fine tobacco? bags. They are both fantastic. After a brief search for some, however, I reconsidered my position. Ive been a pipe smoker for over a decade, and I finally had a pipeful of this celebrated blend. Great scent upon opening - my tin was fairly damp so I let some flakes dry for about 10 minutes before loading. Some decades ago I used to build a crescendo of Balkan/English taste and flavours, beginning with Early Morning Pipe, progressing to My Mixture and Balkan Sobranie and concluding with Nightcap. This a rewarding smoke that brings up images of a foggy morining in London. I actually gave a tin to a friend, and sent back some tins to Richard in order to exchange them for other english blends I enjoy more. I had never really been out of my hometown much other than going with my Dad to our fishing camp which also was in Louisiana. It's absolutely beautiful and the tins are from my era. Penzance is by far the worst tobacco I've ever encountered! Update - Moved to two stars, I got rid of all of my Penzance. The complexity of the flavors are such that I had a hard time reading my book, I just sat there concentrating on this marvelous tobacco. Dry, would not be the packaging description of this tobacco, like others from the Channel Islands, Jersey in fact, it comes a bit moist, so some air would help in the lighting process, not to mention the wet/hot smoke one may encounter. That's not why I like this stuff, really! So there it is.For me,probably the most delectable tobacco I have ever encountered.Superlative adjectives would do it an injustice .
