Our playgroup decided to try out cEDH with more budget-friendly lists.I decided to go for Yuriko (other Decks are Tatyova, Breya / Anje, X) and I took Zack's basic design of the deck. This year my heart was stolen by our first UB Ninja legend, Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow. For me, I just felt it was too mana hungry and fairly likely to be destroyed before I could get much use out of the investment. 5cmc cards can usually be cast (especially if they are ninjas, miracle cards, or the like), are less likely to draw aggro, and are more likely to synergize with our game plan. We can still play small unblockable creatures, and we can still have our Edric-esque ability, but we're going to have to work for it a little bit, making us inherently less threatening. These changes will be reflected in the primer in the near future! I was part of a game where an opponents played Study, and was the perpetual target for the rest of the game. But with more testing, I believe the tempo advantage they provide is enough to outweigh this downside. Boosting base power is a big deal for a deck where all of the creatures are evasive, and coupled with Yuriko's triggers, we can realistically expect about six damage from each attacker. This is especially relevant on turn 2, where ninjutsu-ing Yuriko causes us to have 8 cards in hand, and we have to discard one. Your goal is to play Yuriko on turn 2, get ninjas in play while deploying some stax pieces to slow your opponents, and manipulate the top of your library to maximize the damage she deals with her ability. You have to discard your cards as part of the cost regardless of whether it resolves or not, and its a huge pain to discard most of your hand only to be countered! Of my excursions into UB, the deck that got me most excited was Vela the Night-Clad. We'll draw a card off of every dude we play (and we'll be playing lots of dudes), and we'll draw off of every attack too. But it's useful to have other sources of card draw, especially when they're ninjas too. Indeed, this is the case with most ninjas- they are over-costed and have great on-damage abilities, but don't have evasion themselves to guarantee they can use them. Mothdust Changeling is here entirely because it's effectively a Ninja without any help. But we can bounce them to hand if necessary! This card is great because it creates evasive illusion tokens which can then continue to enable our ninjas turn after turn. Insidious Dreams can also just be used as a value piece if you aren't ready to win but want to claw back from being behind. This is a low cost, evasive creature that is a repeatable tutor, being able to put beefy cards right on top of our deck where we want them. To make this happen, we need to be picky with our opening hand: Only keep an opening hand with , , and an enabler for Yuriko. My concern, however, is that Door relies on us castingNinjas. Often it is best to take a little more time in the early turns to ramp and get some top-deck manipulation on board. Tutors find the cards you need, end of story. These cheap ninjas maximize Yuriko's aggressiveness and punish opponents' clunky threats. Xenograft is included in this deck for redundancy. In my old casual days I used Dauthi Slayer and other creatures with Shadow to achieve this, but today we have better options, like Triton Shorestalker for instance. The first mtg precon I ever bought was the Ninjutsu theme deck from the Kamigawa block, and I soon picked up the black ninjas to make my favorite casual deck. A good set of removal spells is essential for any commander deck. Secondly, by default the fact that ninjutsu functions from the hand means that it does not function from the command zone. We don't have much in the way of creature removal, barring Cyclonic Rift and Evacuation, and most Wraths pose a greater threat to us than our opponents. While the six off the top was never bad, it always sucked to have it in hand late in game when our life total was too low to use it. Counterspell and Mana Drain are great catch-all counterspells, and Mana Drain has the extra bonus of helping us cast our expensive extra turn spells. I never have enough to feel comfortable about activating the top, then leaving enough to recast the bounced creatures, or having to discard the excess cards (hence the [[reliquary tower]] and [[library of leng]]).
